Slating country, within easy reach

Wetherby’s older streets are stone buildings under slate roofs, and coverings like that reward careful work. Slate, stone and conservation

Walk through Wetherby’s centre and it is stone and slate: the older property is stone built, and the roofs on it are typically natural slate or, on some period buildings, stone slate laid in diminishing courses. With slate, the covering usually outlasts its fixings: when slates begin slipping one by one, the common cause is corroded nails rather than failed slate, and sound slates can often be salvaged and relaid. Stone slate is heavy and relies on substantial timbers, so repairs need matching stone and a careful eye on the structure beneath. Lead flashings, valleys and chimney details do much of the waterproofing on buildings like these and deserve the same standard of work as the covering itself. The modern estates around the town are mostly concrete tiled, and repairs there are more routine.
